Opinion Trax: Why Chris Jericho was the right call to win AEW Title

At last night’s All Elite Wrestling All Out pay-per-view event from the Sears Center in Chicago, IL, Chris Jericho defeated “Hangman” Adam Page with a Judas Effect to win the All Elite Wrestling Championship.

Chris Jericho was the absolute right call to win the AEW title as he is a marketable wrestler heading into AEW’s television debut on TNT on October 2nd. Jericho is known worldwide not just for his twenty-plus year career, but he is also a musician in the band Fozzy.

Jericho will not only help AEW expand, but he could help AEW with selling merchandise and possible action figures and video games in the future. But more importantly, this would be for the fans.

What the AEW is doing by putting the belt on Jericho is to attract more viewers for their television show. They are not only trying to attract current wrestling fans but also ones who have not watched wrestling in five, ten years, or longer.

Currently, wrestling fans already know the names of wrestlers for AEW. But if you ask someone who has not watched wrestling in a long time “Do you know who Adam Page is?” their likely response would be  “Who is that?” Now, if you ask someone who has not watched wrestling in a long time “Do you know who Chris Jericho is?” you are likely to get a response like “Yeah, I know who Chris Jericho is, I haven’t watched him wrestle in a long time since I stopped watching wrestling.”

Those are the fans AEW is looking to attract. They are looking to recapture the lost wrestling fan’s spirit because those fans got tired of the state of pro wrestling. Sure, there are other wrestling companies out there, but you can’t always watch them on television if your cable or satellite provider does not carry that channel.  AEW is on a national network a lot of people get.

If those fans are interested to see Jericho again wrestle for another company, they are going to tune in. In the process of not only watching Jericho in AEW, but they are also going to get to know the other wrestlers like Adam Page that might catch their interest and will watch them regularly. Jericho is going to help other wrestlers get over. He is going to do whatever he can to make sure AEW is successful.

By having Jericho as the All Elite Wrestling Champion, AEW stands a chance at becoming a successful wrestling company that would not only attract current wrestling fans looking for an alternative but also attract old-school fans as well.
