Opinion: Should the New York Giants trade Eli Manning

New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur announced today that rookie quarterback Daniel Jones will get the start this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from Raymond James Stadium at 4 pm.

“Eli and I spoke this morning,” Shurmur said. “I told him that we are making a change and going with Daniel as the starter. I also talked to Daniel. Eli was obviously disappointed, as you would expect, but he said he would be what he has always been, a good teammate, and continue to prepare to help this team win games. Daniel understands the challenge at hand, and he will be ready to play on Sunday.”

Daniel Jones was the sixth overall selection in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft from Duke. In his collegiate career at Duke, Jones completed 764 of 1,275 passes for 8,201 with 52 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. Jones also had 406 rushing attempts for 1,323 yards and three touchdowns.

With Daniel Jones now taking the reigns for the Giants, is it time for the Giants to consider trading Eli Manning? Manning is a two-time Super Bowl champion and MVP helping the Giants beat the Patriots twice in Super Bowls 42 and 46. The next question is, who would trade for Eli Manning?

There are several teams who could trade for Eli Manning. Some of the teams like the Buccaneers and, Titans are more likely going to draft a quarterback next year. Others, like the Panthers and Colts, are playoff-caliber teams that need a quarterback. They could reach out to the Giants to inquire about Manning.  The Giants should at least listen to those teams to see what they could get in return.

If the Giants do decide to trade Eli Manning, the Giants could get a draft pick in return and sign a veteran quarterback like Sam Bradford or Paxton Lynch to be Jones’s backup. One thing is for sure; the Daniel Jones era has now begun for the New York Giants.
