Opinion: Philadelphia Eagles are not the team we thought they were

After the 2018 season came to an end with a loss to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Divisional Round playoffs, the Eagles knew a change was coming starting with losing Nick Foles.

During the offseason, the Eagles added players Jordan Howard, Alex Singleton, Malik Jackson, and DeSean Jackson, re-signing Darron Sproles, Jason Peters, Brandon Graham, drafting Andre Dillard, and more.

Some football experts ranked the Eagles as the number-one team in the NFL. Heck, even the video game Madden had the Eagles as the highest-ranked team in the NFL. The Eagles’ offseason moves were uplifting, giving us the thought that the Eagles would be playing in Miami in February.

Unfortunately, the Eagles are nowhere close to being a Super Bowl team. The Eagles did not make any changes to critical positions and staff in the offseason. Instead, they kept their offensive and defensive coordinators, did not address the secondary, linebackers, offensive line, and defensive line, and brought back aging veteran players.

All of this has contributed to the Eagle’s current 3-4 record, trailing in every game except the Jets. Getting obliterated two weeks in a row against the Vikings and Cowboys on national television has fans questioning offseason moves. The blame game is now in full effect; the cracks are beginning to show. The Eagles have fallen hard since winning the Super Bowl.

Sure, the Eagles have lost several key players on both sides of the ball from Malik Jackson, Ronald Darby, Cory Clement, DeSean Jackson, and more due to injuries, but when these guys go down, the players that fill the positions for them are not good and consistently get burned on a lot of plays.

Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman must address this crisis that is going on with the team and try to get good players at the trade deadline next Tuesday. If he does not make a move, this is the team we’re getting for the rest of the year. What he does next Tuesday will tell us if the Eagles are contenders or pretenders.

The Eagles can still turn things around and get back into the season. The coaches, players, and general manager all need to do better. The Schedule does not get easier for the Eagles as they play the Bills next week, the Bears the following week, and then their bye.

After the bye, the Eagles play the Patriots, Seahawks, Dolphins, Giants, Redskins, Cowboys, and Giants. The Eagles have been a disappointing team this year and are not the team that we thought they were.
