Penguins edge Phantoms 2-1

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms were on the road one more time this weekend as they visited the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza to take on the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins Saturday night.

The first period was a tug of war between the teams until Phantoms German Rubtsov was sent to the penalty box for high-sticking with two minutes left in the first period, thus putting the Penguins on the power play. The Penguins took a 1-0 lead as Sam Miletic (2) made a backhand shot goal. Both Adam Johnson (7) and David Warsofsky (10) assisted with Miletic’s goal. The Penguins headed to the locker room with a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Fifty-five seconds into the second period, the Phantoms Mikhail Vorobyev (4) scored on a backhand shot to tie the game 1-1. Greg Carey (7) and Tyler Wotherspoon (4) assisted with Vorobyev’s goal. Both teams headed to the locker room tied 1-1 at the end of the second period.

A minute and twenty-nine seconds into the third period, the Penguins would retake the lead 2-1 on a goal by David Warsofsky (2). Stefan Noesen (6) and Sam Miletic (8) assisted in Warsofsky’s goal. Late in the game, the Phantoms pulled Alex Lyon for an extra attacker but to no prevail as time ran out, and the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 2-1.

While the Phantoms had more shots on goal than the Penguins at thirty-two to twenty-five, the Penguins had the upper hand on the power play as they went one for three while the Phantoms went zero for three.

Phantoms goalie Alex Lyon made twenty-three out of twenty-five saves, allowing two goals while Penguins goalie Dustin Tokarski made thirty-one out of thirty-two saves allowing one goal. The three stars of the game were Penguins center Dave Warsofsky had one goal and one assist; Penguins left winger Sam Miletic also had one goal and one assist and Penguins goalie Dustin Tokarski made thirty-one of thirty-two saves.

The Phantoms return home to the PPL Center to begin a three-game homestand starting Wednesday at 7 pm against the Charlotte Checkers.
