Opinion: Andy Reid finally did it

Last night, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 to win Super Bowl LIV at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, FL. This was Andy Reid’s first Super Bowl win in his twenty-one-year head coaching career.

His previous Super Bowl appearance was an Assistant Offensive Line/Tight End coach with the Green Bay Packers when they won Super Bowl XXXI in New Orleans 35-21 over the New England Patriots. As a head coach, he guided the Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, FL, when the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots 24-21.

This was not an easy game for the Chiefs as they had to battle back in this game, just like what they have been doing this postseason. This postseason, the Chiefs have trailed by double digits against the Texans and Titans and came out winning by double digits. They were down by double digits midway through the fourth quarter and had to find a way to get back into the game.

The game looked like late in the third quarter that the 49ers were going to win the Super Bowl after Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw two interceptions in the third quarter. The first interception that Mahomes threw, the 49ers were able to turn it into a touchdown and go up by ten points 20-10.

The Chiefs battled back in the fourth quarter with what would be the signature play of Mahomes throwing a forty-four-yard pass to Tyreek Hill that would lead to Mahomes throwing to Travis Kelce for a one-yard touchdown to trail by three points 20-17.

The Chiefs would get two more touchdowns by Damion Williams, including the game-winning thirty-eight-yard rushing touchdown to seal the game with a minute and twelve seconds left to go up 31-20. As the game got closer to being final, the cameras were pointing to Andy Reid, and the broadcasters were describing his journey as a head coach for twenty-one years to finally win the Super Bowl.

When the clock showed triple zeros and Joe Buck announced that the Chiefs have won, the Super Bowl win must have felt great for him. After all, his dad, Jack Buck along with Pat Summerall, called the Chiefs last Super Bowl win fifty years ago in Super Bowl IV when the Chiefs beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-7, and Len Dawson was the MVP. You could tell after the game that this meant a lot to him personally. After all, this is the first time in Super Bowl history that a father and son have gotten to call the same team winning the Super Bowl.

To watch Andy Reid not only win the Super Bowl but finally hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy as the confetti fell was awesome to see considering everything he has been through on his journey. Andy Reid is finally a Super Bowl-winning coach and will never have to hear his critics say, “You can’t win the big one” ever again.

Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs and especially Andy Reid for winning this year’s Super Bowl and closing out the 2019 NFL 100th season.
