This past weekend saw somewhat of a return of sports. First, the Bundesliga League made their return to playing in front of no fans. Here in the United States, golf returned in a charity event that pitted Roy McIlroy and Dustin Johnson against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, FL. NASCAR returned with The Real Heroes 400 at Darlington Raceway in front of no fans.
It was nice having some sports back to go along with the KBO baseball league and a great distraction instead of listening to non-stop coverage of the coronavirus that has taken up much of television time. These leagues, especially NASCAR, are the first steps in sports returning. What we do know is golf will return next month for the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, TX. IndyCar will also return next month at Texas Motor Speedway on June 6th and announced over the weekend, IMSA will return on July 3rd and 4th at Daytona International Speedway.
Right now, motorsports are leading the way, and we still don’t know what will happen to the rest of the leagues like NHL, NBA, MLS, and MLB as they continue to discuss plans on how to return and resumes their seasons. What this weekend did for sports fans was give us a preview of what sports will look like for a while with no fans allowed to attend events.
Watching both NASCAR and the Bundesliga League took time to get used to when both telecasts showed the players, racers, and reporters wearing face coverings before the events started. Once the competitions began, I forgot all about it and just enjoyed watching sports again. It will take some time to get used to watching everyone wear masks for a while until this coronavirus passes.
But most importantly, let’s be thankful that these sports leagues are slowly coming back that is not only looking out for the safety of everyone involved but also providing entertainment that has been missing for a couple of months. Let’s be thankful to every athlete, regardless of what sport they play in. They are leaving their families to come to the stadiums or racetracks and perform in front of no fans. But they know while there are no fans in attendance, they are at home watching these events.
Sports brings everyone together, and what a perfect time for some of these leagues to return when we need them the most. We love to talk about sports all the time with friends and families. However, when there are no sports to watch, not a lot of us want to watch replays of games from twenty years ago.
Getting NASCAR back and soon IndyCar, golf, and IMSA along with other leagues that have restarted like the KBO and Bundesliga League is a welcoming site for sports fans. All there is left to say at this point is thank you to these leagues for allowing us to have sports again, and I can’t wait for the rest of the sports leagues to resume once this pandemic is over and we can get back to normal.
