The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship concluded its weekend at Sebring International Raceway for the Cadillac Grand Prix of Sebring. The time for this race is two hours and forty minutes. All four classes (DPi, LMP2, GTLM, GTD) competed in this race.
In the DPi class, the number 31 Cadillac DPi car of Felipe Nasr and Pipo Derani dominated the race. They only gave up the lead three times while they were on pit road. The team would take the victory by 36. 583 seconds over the number 10 Cadillac DPi car of Ryan Briscoe and Renger van der Zande. There were only eight cars that competed in the DPi class.
In the LMP2 class, only five cars competed as the number 81 Oreca LMP2 car of Gustavo Menezes took the victory by 13. 155 seconds over the second-place finisher Spencer Pigot in the number 52 Oreca LMP2 car. The lone caution came out for the number 8 car of John Farano.
In the GTLM class, only six cars competed; however, this class saw the most action along with the GTD class. On pit road, the number 912 Porsche driven by Jon Edwards suffered front end damage exiting off of pit road getting hit by the 911 Porsche driver Fred Makowiecki.
The 912 Porsche came back to pit road to change the nose. Late into the race, the 912 was able to take the third position away from the BMW Team of Connor De Phillippi. The Corvette team took the first two spots with the number four car of Tommy Milner taking the win over Antonio Garcia by .480 seconds.
In the GTD class, ten cars competed. Early in the race, the AIM Vasser Sullivan team battled for the top spot. The number 14 car of Aaron Telitz got by teammate Frankie Montecalvo for first place. The 14 team would lose the top spot to the number 96 BMW of Robert Foley. Once Jack Hawksworth got into the 14 Lexus car, he was on the warpath and caught Foley with a little over an hour left in the race to take the lead back for good.
Late in the race, the 96 BMW, now driven by Bill Auberlen, fought to keep second place from the 63 Ferrari of Toni Vilander. However, Auberlen got loose on turn one, while being side-by-side with Vilander as he completed the pass on turn three to take second place. Vilander was chasing Hawksworth but ran out time as Hawksworth won by 1.510 seconds over Vilander.
The next race for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will be in two weeks at Road America on Sunday, August 2nd, at noon on NBC and NBC Sports Gold Track Pass.
