The Spring League debuts tonight on FS1

The Spring League

The Spring League will debut tonight on FS1 between the Conquerors and Generals. The league was founded in 2016 by former FXFL owner Brian Woods.

The FXFL, known as the Fall Experimental Football League, existed from 2014 to 2015. His goal was to be a feeder league to the NFL. Once the FXFL ceased operations, Woods created The Spring League.

The league helps players get noticed by playing games and practice with some of the top coaches in football. Then their tapes get sent to teams in the NFL, XFL, and CFL. The league has played the last two years in Austin, TX, and usually plays in March and April, but like many sports leagues, they too postponed their season due to the pandemic.

The league also works with other football leagues to test rules out. They worked with the XFL when they experimented with new rules like the kickoff and after-point conversions.

With no CFL and a short XFL season, many players had nowhere else to play and turn to The Spring League to play football. The Spring League decided to have a fall season with six teams and signed a multi-year deal with FS1.

The six teams are not affiliated with any cities, and all of the games will be played at The Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. The teams currently are the Generals, Conquerors, Alphas, Aviators, Jousters, and Blues. The schedule can be viewed below.

Fans will see some familiar faces coaching the six teams in the league. They are long-time NFL coach Jerry Glanville (Conquerors), former Colorado State coach Steve Fairchild (Alphas), former Rutgers and Boston Brawlers (FXFL) coach Terry Shea (Aviators), former New York Sentinels (UFL) coach recent defensive coordinator for Houston Roughnecks (XFL) Ted Cottrell (Blues), former Toronto Argonauts (CFL) and Omaha Nighthawks (UFL) coach Bart Andrus (Generals), and former Raiders and USF defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan (Jousters).
