The Jacksonville Jaguars have relieved head coach Doug Marrone of his duties after five seasons with the team. Marrone finishes his Jaguars tenure with an overall record of 23-43. The Jaguars finished 1-15 this season and have the number one overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Jaguars owner Shad Khan released a statement on Twitter Monday morning.

With that in mind, I spoke this morning with Doug Marrone to express my gratitude for his hard work over the past four seasons as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. I’ll always appreciate Doug’s passion, grit and class, and I’m confident he will enjoy success in the next chapter of his career. As the search for our new general manager continues, now the quest begins to find a head coach who shares my ambition for the Jacksonville Jaguars and our fans, whose loyalty and faith are overdue to be rewarded.”
Before coming to the NFL, Marrone was the head coach at Syracuse for four years, where he led the Orange to two bowl wins. He would leave Syracuse to become the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. He spent two years with the Bills before leaving the team with an overall record of 15-17. In 2015, he was hired as an assistant head coach and offensive line coach for Jaguars under Gus Bradley. Marrone took over the team after Bradley was fired for the last two games.
Marrone became the permanent head coach in 2017. During the 2017 season, the Jaguars finished with a 10-6 record and made it to the AFC championship game. They were defeated by the New England Patriots 24-20. Since then, the Jaguars finished under .500 for the last three seasons.
The Jaguars will be in an intriguing position because the team is $80 million under the cap and have the number one overall pick. The Jaguars have eleven picks total for the 2021 NFL Draft. The Jaguars are reportedly interested in former Ohio State head coach Urban Myer, Titans OC Arthur Smith, and 49ers DC Robert Saleh.
