Last Friday, the Houston Texans named former Baltimore Ravens assistant head coach David Culley as the new head coach. The 65-year-old from Sparta, KY, spent two seasons with the Ravens. He becomes the fourth coach in Texans history and brings a ton of experience to the team.

Culley has spent 43 years in coaching in both college and the NFL dating back to 1978. He also was a former quarterback in Vanderbilt for three seasons (1975-77), playing 33 games completing 31 passes for 360-yards and three touchdowns. The Texans were the last team not to have a head coach before the hire.

Culley began as a Running backs coach with Austin Peay in 1978. He would also coach at Vanderbilt, Middle Tennessee State, Chattanooga, Southwestern Louisiana, Texas El-Paso, and Texas A&M. In 1994; he made the jump to the NFL as a wide receivers coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Culley spent two seasons in Tampa Bay before taking the same position with the Pittsburgh Steelers for three seasons. After his stint in Pittsburgh, he then headed to the other side of Pennsylvania to be the Eagles’ wide receivers coach under Andy Reid for eleven years before being promoted to senior offensive assistant & wide receivers coach. After the Eagles fired Andy Reid after the 2012 season, he followed Reid to Kansas City. He took on a new role as the assistant head coach & wide receivers coach.

Culley spent three seasons in Kansas City before moving to Buffalo to take a new title as the quarterback coach for two seasons. In 2019, he left the Bills for the Ravens, taking on three positions as the assistant head coach, wide receivers coach & passing game coordinator.

The Texans will have eight draft picks in April’s NFL Draft. In 2021, the Texans will play the AFC South, AFC East, NFC West, and the Cleveland Browns.
