IronPigs win rain-shorten game 7-1

Lehigh Valley IronPigs

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (4-1) wrapped up a six-game homestand Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park against the Rochester Red Wings (1-4). The IronPigs were coming off a 7-2 win Saturday night over the Red Wings. Starting for the IronPigs was Adonis Medina, who is looking for his first win of the season. Starting for the Red Wings was Wander Suero.

Media got Luis Garcia to fly out for the first out and struck out Gerardo Parra for the second out. Jake Noll was up next and hit a solo home run to left field on a 1-0 count to put Rochester up 1-0. Medina got Daniel Palka to strike out to end the top of the first. The IronPigs were up next at bat.

Travis Jankowski struck out; third basemen Ronald Torreyes walked. The next batter up was Mickey Moniak. He hit a sharp line drive to right field to score Torreyes on a triple to tie the game at one apiece. The next batter up was Austin Listi. He hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought home Moniak to put the IronPigs up 2-1. C.J. Chatham struck out to end the inning.

Medina was able to retire the side in the top of the second inning. Steven Fuentes was the new pitcher for the Red Wings. When the IronPigs went up to bat, Luke Williams was up first. He tried to bunt to first and was called out. Fuentes would then walk the next three batters to load the bases. After a mound visit, Travis Jankowski singled to right field to bring home two runners and extend Lehigh Valley’s lead to 4-1.

Ronald Torreyes was the next batter for Lehigh Valley, and he doubled past the shortstop to score another run. The IronPigs were now up 5-1. Red Wings pitcher Steven Fuentes then threw a wild pitch, scoring Jankowski for a 6-1 lead. Mickey Moniak was up next and sacrificed to center field to score Torreyes, and it was 7-1 IronPigs.

It was light rain for most of the game, with periods of downpours. The ground crews tried to use Quick Dry to dry the mound and batters box so the game could continue; however, the dirt turned to clay, and the pitchers were sliding about on the mound.

The game went scoreless the rest of the way. The rain began to fall harder in the fourth inning. IronPigs grounds continued to work on the field. Adonis Medina went 5.0 innings, allowing one hit, one earned run, one walk, and six strikeouts.

In the top of the sixth inning, the rain continued to fall steadily. Mauricio Llovera was the new pitcher for the IronPigs. After giving up a double to Jake Noll, Llovera recovered and got the next three batters out.

After the inning, the umpires told the grounds crew to cover the infield. Not long after that, the game was called, and the IronPigs won 7-1. Adonis Medina got his first win of the season while the loss went to Wander Suero.

The IronPigs will have a day off tomorrow before starting a six-game road trip to PNC Field against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Tuesday, May 11th, at 6:35 pm.
