The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (5-2) were back at PNC Field for game two Wednesday night against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (6-1). The IronPigs were shut out by the RailRiders 6-0 on Tuesday. The starting pitchers were Brody Koerner for the RailRiders and Bailey Falter for the IronPigs.
Before the game started, the Phillies announced that Kyle Glogoski was headed back to Reading. Relief pitcher Archie Bradley would be heading to Lehigh Valley on a rehab assignment.
Iron Pigs left fielder Travis Jankowski started the top of the first inning with a single. Up next for Lehigh Valley was Ronald Torreyes. Brody Koerner’s ball got past catcher Rob Brandly, and Jankowski moved up to second base. Torreyes then doubled to right field to score Jankowski to give the IronPigs a 1-0 lead.
The game went scoreless for seven innings after that. Iron Pig’s Bailey Falter went five innings, allowing three hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts. Archie Bradley came in the sixth inning but only pitched one inning. David Paulino was the new pitcher for the IronPigs.
He started the bottom of the eighth inning, walking Armando Alvarez, then giving up a single from Greg Allen to place runners on the corners. Andrew Velazquez was up next, and he hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to score Alvarez to tie the game at one apiece.
Then Paulino threw a wild pitch, moving Allen to third base. Miguel Andujar was up next for the RailRiders. He also hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring Allen home and a 2-1 RailRiders lead. Paulino got Derek Dietrich to ground out to end the inning.
In the top of the ninth inning, Nick Goody pitched for the RailRiders. He struck out C.J. Chatham for the first out, followed by a walk to Edgar Cabral. IronPigs right-fielder Cornelius Randolph was up next and crushed the ball out to right field for a two-run home run giving the Lehigh Valley a 3-2 lead. After the home run, both Luke Williams and Travis Jankowski grounded out to end the top of the ninth inning.
The IronPigs made a pitching change with Mauricio Llovera coming in for a save situation. He gave up a double to Ryan LaMarre to start the bottom of the ninth inning. RailRiders right fielder Socrates Brito was up next, and he grounded out for the first out as LaMarre went to third base.
The IronPigs intentionally walked Rob Brantly before striking out Max McDowell for the second out. On an 0-2 count, Llovera got Armando Alverez to line out to right field for Randolph, who caught the ball to end the game.
Lehigh Valley defeated the RailRiders 3-2, snapping the RailRiders’ six-game winning streak and improving to 6-2 on the season. The win went to David Paulino, and the save went to Mauricio Llovera. The loss went to Nick Goody.
The IronPigs continue their six-game trip in Scranton for game three tomorrow at 6:35 with Nick Green pitching for the RailRiders, and the IronPigs will send David Parkinson to the mound.
