The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (9-6) returned to NBT Bank Stadium Friday night for game four against the Syracuse Mets (3-12). The starting pitchers for this game were Adonis Medina for the IronPigs versus Jesus Reyes of the Mets.
The game went scoreless in the first five innings. IronPigs pitcher Adonis Medina pitched five innings, not allowing a hit, and four strikeouts. At the top of the sixth inning, IronPigs left fielder Travis Jankowski singled to right field. Then, shortstop Ruben Tejada hit the ball towards third baseman David Thompson. The ball went under his glove as he reached first base while Jankowski went to third base.
IronPigs second baseman Luke Williams singled to center field to score Jankowski for a 1-0 lead. Then Mickey Moniak blew the game open with a three-run home run out towards left field that extended the IronPigs lead to 4-0.
The Mets made a pitching change after the home run. Marcel Renteria was the new pitcher for the Mets. He walked third baseman Austin Listi, then gave up a single to Cornelius Randolph that loaded the bases. Then Renteria walked IronPigs catcher Edgar Cabral to make it 5-0. After Ryan Cordell struck out, the Mets made another pitching change.
A.J. Schugel came in for Renteria. The IronPigs had batted around, with Jankowski coming back to bat. He grounded to first base as the Mets got Cabral out while two runners scored to make it 7-0. Mets second baseman Cody Bohanek was injured after the play but stayed in the game.
Moving ahead to the eighth inning, right fielder Cornelius Randolph walked before the Mets made another pitching change. Arodys Vizcaino was the new pitcher. He struck out two IronPigs batters before walking Travis Jankowski. IronPigs shortstop Ruben Tejada singled that brought home Randolph for an 8-0 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, IronPigs had a no-hitter going until Quinn Brodey singled to right field. Lehigh Valley did look sloppy in this inning. Mets shortstop Drew Jackson singled to left field, and both Jankowski and Moniak let the ball get away as Brodey scored to cut the IronPigs lead 8-1.
A sacrifice fly by Mets catcher Bruce Maxwell added another run to make it 8-2. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Jeff Singer came in for Bryan Mitchell after giving up another run for an 8-3 game. Singer struck out Quinn Brodey for the first out. Then he got Arodys Vizcaino to ground out while surrendering another run. The game was now 8-4 IronPigs. Singer got shortstop Drew Jackson to fly out that ended the game. The IronPigs defeated the Mets 8-4.
Adonis Medina was the winning pitcher, while Jesus Reyes suffered the loss. IronPigs pitcher Jeff Singer picked up his first save of the season.
