IronPigs Win on a Wild Pitch 6-5 in Extra Innings

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (11-7) returned to Coca-Cola Park Tuesday night to begin a six-game homestand against the Worcester Red Sox (11-7) in front of 2,787 fans. The starting pitchers for this game were Stephen Gonsalves of Worcester and David Parkinson for Lehigh Valley.

The game was scoreless in the first three innings. Red Sox’s first baseman Michael Chavis started the top of the fourth inning with a single. Two batters later, third baseman Yairo Munoz tripled to left field that brought home Chavis to put the Red Sox up 1-0. Red Sox left fielder Marcus Wilson was next. He singled to left field bringing home Munoz that extended the Red Sox lead 2-0.

Moving to the bottom of the fourth inning with one out, IronPigs designated hitter Ryan Cordell cut the Red Sox lead 2-1 with a home run out towards left field.

At the bottom of the fifth inning, both IronPigs left fielder Travis Jankowski, and shortstop Ruben Tejada walked with two outs. Then Lehigh Valley center fielder Mickey Moniak tripled out towards right field that scored two runners as the IronPigs took the lead 3-2.

Moving ahead to the bottom of the seventh inning with one out. Lehigh Valley left fielder Travis Jankowski doubled to left field. Then shortstop Ruben Tejada singled to center field that brought home Jankowski and extended the IronPigs lead 4-2.

In the top of the ninth inning, IronPigs pitcher Damon Jones tried to close out the game. He walked Yairo Munoz with one out. Then gave up a double with two outs to Michael Gettys, scoring Munoz that cut Lehigh Valley’s lead to 4-3.

Lehigh Valley brought in Neftali Feliz to get the last out. Instead, he gave up a double to Cesar Puello that scored Gettys to tie the game at four apiece.

Red Sox catcher Jett Brandy went to second to start the top of the tenth inning. Worcester designated hitter Josh Ockimery reached first base after Sal Gozzo bobbled the ball while Brandy went to third base. Red Sox second baseman Jonathan Arauz brought home Brandy with a sacrifice fly towards left field that gave the Red Sox a 5-4 lead.

Lehigh Valley first baseman Darick Hall went to second base to begin the bottom of the tenth inning. The Red Sox made a pitching change going with Marcus Walden. With one out, Waldon walked IronPigs right fielder Cornelius Randolph. The next batter up was IronPigs catcher Edgar Cabral. He singled out towards center field to bring home Hall that tied the game at five apiece.

The IronPigs brought in C.J. Chatham to replace Sal Gozzo up at bat. Walden walks him to load the bases. With two outs, shortstop Ruben Tejada was up to bat. Walden’s ball hit the glove of catcher Jett Brandy, passing Brandy that scored Cabral to end the game. The IronPigs defeated the Red Sox 6-5 in ten innings. It was the second game this the IronPigs won on a wild pitch.

IronPigs starting pitcher David Parkinson went five innings, five hits, two runs, and seven strikeouts. The winning pitcher went to Lehigh Valley’s Enyel De Los Santos (2.0 IP, 4 SO), while the loss went to Marcus Walden (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB). Neftali Feliz earned the save for the IronPigs.

Lehigh Valley returned to Coca-Cola Park for game two against the Worcester Red Sox today at 7:05 pm on MiLB.com
