IronPigs Lose game two of Doubleheader to Red Sox

Half an hour after the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (13-9) fell to the Red Sox (13-9) in game one of a doubleheader 4-2 at Coca-Cola Park. The IronPigs were looking to split the doubleheader Saturday night. Lehigh Valley sent Bailey Falter to the mound while Daniel Gossett pitched for the Red Sox.

Moving to the bottom of the second inning, IronPigs right fielder Ryan Cordell hit a solo home run out towards center field to put Lehigh Valley up 1-0. Then IronPigs shortstop C.J. Chatham singled to right field. Two batters later, with two outs, Lehigh Valley catcher Edgar Cabral doubled towards left field, scoring Chatham that extended the IronPigs lead 2-0.

Lehigh Valley held Worcester scoreless for three more innings until the top of the sixth inning. IronPigs new pitcher Damon Jones walked the first three batters to start the sixth inning. Lehigh Valley then made a pitching change going with Jeff Singer. He walked designated hitter Michael Gettys, bringing home a run that cut the IronPigs lead 2-1.

Then Red Sox shortstop Jack Lopez hit a sacrifice fly out towards center field, scoring Yairo Munoz that tied the game. Worcester catcher Jeff Bandy was next. Both Cesar Puello and Michael Gettys stole second and third base. Then Bandy singled to right field, bringing two more runs home as the Red Sox now led 4-2.

Moving ahead to the bottom of the seventh inning, the Red Sox sent Kevin McCarthy in to close the game. Lehigh Valley second baseman Sal Gozzo singled to center field. Two batters later, IronPigs designated hitter Ruben Tejada singled to right field. Then Mickey Moniak singled to right field that loaded the bases.

The IronPigs were unable to tie the game as the last two batters popped out. The Red Sox defeated the IronPigs 4-2 sweeping the doubleheader.

Lehigh Valley starting pitcher Bailey Falter finished the game (4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 9 SO). The winning pitcher went to Worcester’s Daniel Gossett (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO), and the loss went to Damon Jones (0.1 IP, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO). Kevin McCarthy earned the save.
