The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (13-10) looked to salvage the series Sunday night versus the Worcester Red Sox (14-9). Lehigh Valley has lost three straight to the Red Sox. The starting pitchers for the game were Lehigh Valley’s David Parkinson against Worcester’s John Schreiber.
The game was scoreless in the first three innings until the top of the fourth inning. David Parkinson walked Red Sox right fielder Cesar Puello. Two batters later, he walked Red Sox catcher Jeff Bandy. With two outs, Worcester center fielder Tate Matheny singled on a line drive to left field, scoring Puello that put the Red Sox up 1-0.
Moving to the top of the fifth inning with one out, the IronPigs made a pitching change with David Paulino in for David Parkinson. Then Paulino gave up a home run to Red Sox designated hitter Franchy Cordero for a 2-0 lead.
The rain started to fall hard at the top of the sixth inning. Lehigh Valley’s offense was unable to get anything going in this game. After the sixth inning, the umpires had the grounds crew put the tarp on the field. Half an hour later, the game was called, and the Red Sox won 2-0 over the IronPigs. Lehigh Valley dropped four of six games to the Red Sox.
Red Sox pitcher John Schreiber pitched one inning, with one walk and two strikeouts. The winning pitcher was Stephen Gonsalves (5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 9 SO). The loss went to IronPigs pitcher David Parkinson (4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO).
