Pato O’Ward muscles his way to Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Win

The NTT IndyCar Series concluded the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Belle Isle. Josef Newgarden won the pole Sunday morning, and Colton Herta started second. Oliver Askew replaced Felix Rosenqvist. Rosenqvist was released from the hospital Sunday morning.

Scott Dixon, Oliver Askew, and Alexander Rossi touched on the front stretch on the opening lap. Scott Dixon briefly went sideways before using Rossi’s car to straighten out. Meanwhile, Max Chilton ran into the back of James Hinchcliffe’s car, knocking the front wing off before he came to a stop. The caution came out for Chilton.

No one went to pit road during the caution, and the race resumed on the fourth lap. The first scheduled pit stops started on lap 20. Dalton Kellett’s car lost a wheel nut at the exit off pit road during the pit stops. His crew had to rush to get him back to pit road.

Josef Newgarden did not lose the lead during the pit stop cycles. Shortly after the second round of pit stop cycles were done, Jimmie Johnson went around on the front stretch, bringing out the second caution on lap 57. His car did not suffer any damage.

The race restarted on lap 58. On the same lap, Romain Grosjean’s car caught on fire. Grosjean grabbed a fire extinguisher and attempted to put the fire out. The safety team pulled Grosjean away then put the fire out.

The race resumed with eight laps to go, Pato O’Ward, who restarted fifth, moved up two positions to third, chasing Colton Herta. With six laps to go, O’Ward got by Herta for second. Not long after taking second place, O’Ward passed Newgarden with two laps to go. Meanwhile, Alex Palou passed Hera for third place.

Pato O’Ward won the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Race 2 by 6.7595 seconds over Josef Newgarden. It was O’Ward’s second win of the season.

The rest of the top ten finishers were Josef Newgarden second, Alex Palou third, Colton Herta fourth, Graham Rahal fifth, Will Power sixth, Scott Dixon seventh, Simon Pagenaud eighth, Marcus Ericsson ninth, and Santino Ferrucci tenth. Josef Newgarden led 67 laps, the most in the race. There were one lead change and three cautions for eleven laps.

The NTT IndyCar Series heads to Road America next Sunday, June 20th, at noon on NBCSN.
