The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (19-19) were back at Polar Park for game three Thursday night versus the Worcester Red Sox (24-14). Lehigh Valley snapped the Red Sox’s seven-game winning streak in an 8-2 win on Wednesday night. The starting pitchers for the game were David Parkinson (0-3, 4.71 ERA) for Lehigh Valley against Tanner Houck (0-1, 9.00 ERA) for Worcester.
In the bottom of the third inning, with two outs and a runner on first base, Red Sox right fielder Jarren Duran doubled to left field, scoring a run for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Red Sox designated hitter Franchy Cordero singled to right field, adding another run 2-0.
The IronPigs offense had been quiet for six innings until the seventh inning. A Ruben Tejada walk set up a Mickey Moniak two-run home run out towards center field tied the game 2-2.
With the game tied at two apiece in the bottom of the eighth inning, Red Sox shortstop Jeter Downs crushed the ball to left field over the scoreboard to put Worcester back up 3-2.
In the top of the ninth inning, Red Sox pitcher Kaleb Ort got Ruben Tejada to ground out and strike out two batters that ended the game. The IronPigs comeback attempt fell short in a 3-2 loss.
Lehigh Valley starting pitcher David Parkinson pitched (4.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO). The winning pitcher went to Red Sox pitcher Kaleb Ort (2.0 IP, 3 SO), while the loss went to Lehigh Valley’s Damon Jones (1.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO).
Both teams will be back at Polar Park for game four today at 6:35 pm on MiLB.com. Cristopher Sanchez (2-1, 3.29) will start for Lehigh Valley versus Stephen Gonsalves (2-1, 3.38 ERA) of Worcester.
