The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (19-20) were back at Polar Park for game four versus the Worcester Red Sox (25-14). The IronPigs are 3-6 against the Red Sox this year. Lehigh Valley made a starting pitcher change with Matt Moore (0-1. 4.73 ERA) heading to the mound for the IronPigs versus Stephen Gonsalves (2-1, 3.38 ERA). Cristopher Sanchez was supposed to start for the IronPigs.
In the bottom of the second inning, Red Sox’s third baseman Yairo Munoz’s solo home run out towards left field put Worcester up 1-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, IronPigs left fielder Adam Haseley was taken out of the game, and Scott Kingery, who started at second base, moved to left field.
At the top of the fifth inning, Lehigh Valley tied the game 1-1 on a solo home run by Ryan Cordell over the 403-foot mark in center field.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, with a runner on first, Red Sox right fielder Jarren Duran hit an opposite-field two-run home run out towards left field that put the Red Sox back up 3-1.
Moving ahead to the bottom of the eighth inning with a runner on first base. The Red Sox put the game away when Red Sox’s first baseman Michael Chavis nailed a two-run home run for a 5-1 lead.
At the top of the ninth inning, the Red Sox brought in Marcus Walden to close out the game. He got two Lehigh Valley players to ground out, then a flyout that ended the game. The IronPigs lost 5-1 to Worcester. The Red Sox have won three out of four and won nine out of ten games. Lehigh Valley is now 19-21 for the season.
Lehigh Valley pitcher Matt Moore (6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO) suffered the loss, while Worcester pitcher Stephen Gonsalves (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 7 SO) earned the win.
Both teams will return to Polar Park on Saturday for game five at 4:05 pm on MiLB.com. Kyle Hart (2-3, 5.92) is starting for Worcester, while the IronPigs will announce their pitcher today.
