IronPigs squander three-run lead and lose 5-4 to Buffalo

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (23-30) closed out the six-game series in Trenton Sunday night versus the Buffalo Bisons (30-21). Lehigh Valley were looking to split the series after winning the doubleheader on Saturday.

On the mound for Lehigh Valley was Chase Anderson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to counter Buffalo’s T.J. Zeuch (2-3, 4.24 ERA).

 At the top of the second inning, with one out and a runner on first, IronPigs first baseman Darick Hall hit an opposite double to left field, scoring a run that put Lehigh Valley up 1-0. Two batters later, IronPigs catcher Logan Moore’s two-run home run extended Lehigh Valley’s lead to 3-0. Tyler Alexander replaced Chase Anderson in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, with a runner on third and two outs, IronPigs pitcher Tyler Alexander threw a wild pitch that allowed Buffalo to score and cut the lead to 3-1.

Moving to the bottom of the sixth inning with runners on first and second and one out, Bisons first baseman Rowdy Tellez crushed a three-run home run out towards right field that put the Bisons on top 4-3.

Ramon Rosso was the new pitcher for the IronPigs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After loading the bases, Bisons first baseman Rowdy Tellez grounded out to first base, scoring a run for a 5-3 lead.

At the top of the ninth inning, with runners on second and third and one out, IronPigs shortstop Nick Maton grounded out to first baseman Rowdy Tellez, scoring a run that cut Buffalo’s lead to one 5-4. Buffalo pitcher Jon Axford then struck out Matt Vierling to end the game. The IronPigs lose the series to the Bisons 5-4.

Lehigh Valley starting pitcher Chase Anderson went (3.0 IP, 1, H, and 3 SO). The win went to Buffalo pitcher Joel Payamps (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 SO), while the loss went to IronPigs pitcher Tyler Alexander (2.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 SO). Bisons closer Jon Axford (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) earned his second save of the season.

The IronPigs will have off on Monday before returning to Coca-Cola Park to begin another six-game series with the Worcester Red Sox on Tuesday at 7:05 pm.
