Lehigh Valley IronPigs

After being rained out last night, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (24-33) returned to Coca-Cola Park with a 10-3 loss to the Worcester Red Sox (33-22). Chase Anderson (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who is on a rehab assignment, got the start for the IronPigs while on the mound for the Red Sox was Daniel Gossett (5-3, 4.98 ERA).

The game started in a rain delay for about thirty minutes. However, once the game started, the Red Sox didn’t waste any time. At the top of the first inning, with runners on second and third, Red Sox left fielder Franchy Cordero’s two-run single to right field put Worcester up 2-0. However, Cordero was caught stealing second base a short time later.

Then with two outs and runners on the corners, Red Sox third baseman Jack Lopez’s two-run single extended Worcester’s lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the first inning, IronPigs shortstop Nick Maton’s solo home run to right field cut the Red Sox lead to 4-1.

Moving ahead to the top of the fourth inning, Chase Anderson (3.0 IP, 6 H, 4 H, 4 ER, 6 SO) was replaced by Jakob Hernandez. With two outs and a runner on first, Red Sox center fielder Marcus Wilson doubled to right field that got the run back to 5-1.

At the top of the fifth inning, David Parkinson, who was supposed to start last night’s game, was the new pitcher for the IronPigs. Moving ahead to the top of the seventh inning with one out and a runner on first, Red Sox’s first baseman Chris Herrmann doubled to center field, adding another run 6-1. Two batters later, Red Sox right fielder Johan Mieses crushed a two-run home run out towards left field for an 8-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, with runners on first and second, IronPigs right fielder Charlie Tilson’s RBI single to center field made it 8-2. Then, at the top of the eighth inning, both Red Sox designated hitter Josh Ockimey and Red Sox center fielder Marcus Wilson hit solo home runs. This put Worcester up 10-2. Then, in the bottom of the ninth inning, with the bases loaded and one out, IronPigs third baseman Matt Vierling’s sacrifice fly cut the Red Sox’s lead to 10-3.

Worcester pitcher Kaleb Ort struck out Mickey Moniak to end the game, and IronPigs lose 10-3. The win went to Red Sox starting pitcher Daniel Gossett (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO), and the loss went to IronPigs pitcher Chase Anderson.

Both teams return to Coca-Cola Park today at 6:35 pm with Spencer Howard (1-0, 0.64 ERA) on the mound for Lehigh Valley to oppose Tanner Houck (0-1, 4.08 ERA) for Worcester.
