IronPigs shut out Red Sox 3-0

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (32-40) shut out the Worcester Red Sox (37-33) Sunday afternoon 3-0 in front of 6,039 fans. Victor Vargas made his IronPigs debut after spending time in Clearwater. His record for the Threshers was (4-1, 3.62 ERA). The Red Sox started Enmanuel De Jesus, who was making his debut after spending time in Double-A Portland (3-2, 5.34 ERA).

First baseman Darick Hall put the IronPigs on top 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to center field. It was Hall’s seventh home run of the season.

Then in the bottom of the third inning, IronPigs right fielder Jorge Bonifacio hit a solo home run off a hanging slider to left field that extended Lehigh Valley’s lead to 2-0. It was Bonifacio’s first home run of the year.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, with a runner on first, IronPigs third baseman Daniel Brito tripled to left field, bringing home another run for a 3-0 lead. It was Brito’s first triple of the season.

At the top of the eighth inning, the IronPigs brought in Jakob Hernandez to pitch the last two innings. He got the six outs as Lehigh Valley defeated Worcester 3-0. The IronPigs are now on a four-game winning streak.

Lehigh Valley pitcher Victor Vargas (5.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 SO) earned his first win of the season, while Enmanuel De Jesus (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) suffered the loss. Jakob Hernandez (2.0 IP, 2 SO) earned his first save of the year.

The IronPigs will have off on Monday before heading to Rochester, NY, to take on the Red Wings Tuesday at 7:05 pm.
