Lehigh Valley Suffers Agonizing 9-3 loss to Buffalo

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (37-43) only put up three runs Saturday night in a 9-3 loss to the Buffalo Bisons (48-32). The starting pitchers for the game were David Paulino (3-2, 3.99 ERA) for Lehigh Valley and Zach Logue (3-2, 4.06 ERA) for Buffalo.

Buffalo jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run to center field by designated hitter Richard Urena at the top of the first inning.

With the bases loaded for Buffalo at the top of the fourth inning, second baseman Dilson Herrera brought home another run on a sacrifice fly to right field for a 3-0 lead.

At the top of the fifth inning, with a runner on third base, Bisons first baseman Tyler White drove home another run with an RBI single to right field for a 4-0 lead.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth inning, IronPigs first baseman Darick Hall hit a solo home run to right-center field that cut the Bisons lead to 4-1. It was Hall’s ninth home run of the year. Four batters later, Lehigh Valley catcher Rafael Marchan singled to center field, scoring another run now trailing 4-2.

With the bases loaded for the IronPigs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lehigh Valley pulled within one 4-3 after shortstop Arquimedes Gamboa was walked. This was as close as the IronPigs got to Buffalo.

At the top of the seventh inning, with a runner on first base, Buffalo center fielder Forrest Wall tripled to right field that brought home a run 5-3. Then, shortstop Kevin Smith hit a sharp ground ball to left field, adding another run 6-3.

The runs kept coming, and designated hitter Richard Urena drove in his third RBI of the night with a single to center field for a 7-3 lead. Then Buffalo third baseman Christian Colon crushed a solo home run to left field for an 8-3 lead.

Buffalo added one run at the top of the eighth inning on an RBI double by first baseman Tyler White for a 9-3 lead. It was White’s twentieth RBI of the season.

Travis Bergen closed out the game for Buffalo in the bottom of the ninth inning. He got the last three outs that ended the game, and IronPigs lose to the Bisons 9-3.

The win went to Buffalo starting pitcher Zach Logue (5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR), and the loss went to IronPigs starting pitcher David Paulino (4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR).

Both teams finish up the six-game series today at 1:35 pm. Adonis Medina (3-5, 5.25 ERA) is on the mound for Lehigh Valley versus Buffalo’s Thomas Hatch (0-2, 3.15 ERA).
