After a year-long wait for the inaugural MLB Field of Dreams game. The game took place Thursday night on the site where the 1989 film Field of Dreams movie was filmed in Dyersville, Iowa. The field featured an old-school wooden scoreboard.
Before the game began, there was a ceremony where actor Kevin Costner, who played Ray Kinsella, walked through the cornfield and onto the field. The added touch was the Field of Dreams soundtrack playing from the speakers. Next, Costner true to his Ray Kinsella character, looked around the field while holding a baseball.
He then turned his head toward the outfield and out came the players of the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees from the cornfield. It was a chilling moment as the line “if you build it, they will come,” permeates your mind in remembrance of days gone by.
FOX did an excellent job with the camera work showing the back of Yankees star Aaron Judge before cutting back to the field. The music to go along with the player entrances gave me goosebumps. My thoughts went directly to the greatest baseball players of all time coming out of the cornfield, just like the movie. The game itself was fun to watch. Who doesn’t wish that scenario could come true.
The ariel cameras showed the top of the baseball field several times during the game, showing that the field was not far from the original movie field. It reminded you of the film’s final scene where the cars were arriving to watch the game.
The White Sox led most of the game until the top of the ninth inning when Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton put the Yankees on top 8-7. The White Sox won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning 9-8 on a two-run home by Tim Anderson.
Major League Baseball hit a home run with this game. The game felt like you were watching the movie all over again. Both teams were wearing old-school uniforms to go along with the Field of Dreams theme. Everything about this game was magical and should be an annual tradition for MLB.
