IronPigs hold on to take series win at PNC Field

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (41-46) held on to a 5-4-win Sunday afternoon at PNC Field to take the series over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (50-33). Adonis Medina (3-5, 4-94 ERA) returned to Lehigh Valley from Philadelphia to start the game. He went up against Deivi Garcia (2-5, 7.25 ERA) of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

At the top of the first inning with runners on the corners, Lehigh Valley right fielder Jorge Bonifacio doubled to center field, scoring a run for a 1-0 lead. Then two batters later, RailRiders pitcher Deivi Garcia threw a wild pitch, adding another run for the IronPigs 2-0. Later, IronPigs left fielder Matt Vierling was hit to load the bases. Lehigh Valley was unable to add any more runs.

In the bottom of the first inning with runners on first and second base, RailRiders designated hitter Chris Gittens put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre up 3-2 with a three-run home run to left field. It was Gittens ninth home run of the season.

After IronPigs catcher Rafael Marchan doubled to right field, right fielder Jorge Bonifacio singled to left field at the top of the second inning, bringing Marchan home that tied the game 3-3.

Moving ahead to the top of the eighth inning with a runner on second, IronPigs second baseman Arquimedes Gamboa tripled to center field, putting Lehigh Valley up 4-3. Then, a single by IronPigs shortstop Nick Maton added an insurance run to make it 5-3.

In the bottom of the eighth inning with the bases loaded, RailRiders left fielder Greg Allen singled to right field that made it a one-run game 5-4. Then Lehigh Valley was able to turn a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, IronPigs pitcher Jakob Hernandez replaced Mike Adams with two outs. Hernandez got the last batter out to end the game and Lehigh Valley defeated Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 5-4.

Lehigh Valley starting pitcher Adonis Medina finished the day (3.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR). Lehigh Valley pitcher Cristopher Sanchez (4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 3 SO), was supposed to be the starter today. Instead, he came in after Medina and earned his fourth win of the year. The loss went to RailRiders pitcher Adam Warren (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 SO).

Lehigh Valley will be off on Monday before continuing their road trip at Frontier Field starting Tuesday against the Rochester Red Wings at 7:05 pm.
