Lehigh Valley starts the series with a loss at Rochester

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (41-47) continued its road trip Tuesday night at Frontier Field against the Rochester Red Wings (34-51). Mark Appel (3-2, 4.41 ERA) started for Lehigh Valley against Rochester’s Austin Voth (3-0, 4.81 ERA).

The IronPigs had two Phillies players make rehab assignments in pitcher Sam Coonrod and shortstop Freddy Galvis. Freddy Galvis started at shortstop for Lehigh Valley.

In the bottom of the first inning, with a runner on second base, Red Wings catcher Keibert Ruiz singled to right field, scoring a run for a 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Red Wings first baseman Derek Dietrich cleaned house with a grand slam to right field for a 5-0 lead.

At the top of the fourth inning, with runners on the corners, IronPigs first baseman Darick Hall smashed a three-run home run to center field that cut the Red Wings lead 5-3. It was Hall’s eleventh home run of the year and the sixtieth home run this year for Lehigh Valley.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ramon Rosso replaced Sam Coonrod for Lehigh Valley. After walking two Red Wings players with one out, Rosso gave up a single to Red Wings left fielder Nick Banks, scoring a run for a 6-3 lead. Coonrod pitched one inning.

At the top of the seventh inning, with runners on first and second base, IronPigs center fielder Mickey Moniak singled to right field that cut the Red Wings lead 6-4.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, with runners on first and second base, Red Wings second baseman Jake Noll doubled to left field, scoring two runs for an 8-4 lead.

Aaron Barrett was the new pitcher for the Red Wings at the top of the ninth inning. He got the last three outs, and the IronPigs lose 8-4 to the Red Wings. IronPigs shortstop Freddy Galvis finished the night 0-3 with one strikeout.

Lehigh Valley starting pitcher Mark Appel (1.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR) suffered his third loss of the season, while the win went to Red Wings pitcher Alberto Baldonado (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO).

Game two of the seven-game series continues today at 7:05 pm. Pitchers for both teams will be announced later.
