On Thursday, the NTT IndyCar Series announced they are returning to Iowa Speedway for a doubleheader weekend on July 23-24, 2022. Midwest grocery chain Hy-Vee will be the race’s title sponsor after agreeing to a multi-year deal with IndyCar.
According to Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern, IndyCar is renting Iowa Speedway from NASCAR and will promote the races.
NTT IndyCar Series owner Roger Penske on returning to Iowa, said. “We’re extremely pleased to return Iowa Speedway to the NTT IndyCar Series calendar. Over the years, Iowa has proven to be a fitting showcase for North America’s premier open-wheel series. A key oval and a hallmark on our schedule, we deeply missed seeing our fans in Iowa this year and look forward to what’s ahead.”
Roger Penske added that Iowa has a rich racing history. “The state is rich with racing history and has a strong appreciation for IndyCar and its terrific drivers and teams. The fantastic addition of Hy-Vee and their commitment to our sport underscores the added value. Thanks to Hy-Vee and the State of Iowa for welcoming the return of IndyCar racing to Iowa Speedway.”
The NTT IndyCar Series has raced at Iowa Speedway since 2007 after the track opened in 2006. Last year, IndyCar held its first doubleheader at Iowa Speedway. Team Penske swept both of those races.
Among those who have won at Iowa are Dario Franchitti (2007, 2009), Dan Wheldon (2008), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2012, 2014, 2015), Tony Kannan (2010), Marco Andretti (2011), Helio Castroneves (2017), James Hinchcliffe (2013, 2018), Simon Pagenaud (2020), and Josef Newgarden (2016, 2019, 2020).
Hy-Vee Chairman, President, and CEO Randy Edeker expressed his excitement about sponsoring the event said. “With our strong connection to local communities and involvement in the state, we plan to host an event that will receive national attention and make Newton an annual destination for racing fans. The weekend will be filled with multiple attractions and events that celebrate everything that is great about Iowa and NTT IndyCar Series racing.”
In addition to returning to Iowa, the NTT IndyCar Series announced that fans can sign up for ticket information at www.INDYCARatIowa.com. The 2022 NTT IndyCar Series schedule will be released at a later date.
