Lehigh Valley swept in a doubleheader by Rochester

On Saturday, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (42-51) played another doubleheader at Frontier Field against the Rochester Red Wings (39-52). Both games were played in seven innings. If the game is tied after seven innings, the game continues until there is a winner.

In game one, Adonis Medina (3-5, 5.17 ERA) started for Lehigh Valley versus Rochester’s Luis Reyes (0-2, 10.80 ERA).

With the bases loaded for the Red Wings in the bottom of the first inning, right fielder Daniel Palka grounded out to second baseman T.J. Rivera, allowing a run to score for a 1-0 lead.

At the top of the fifth inning, with runners on first and second base, IronPigs catcher Tyler Heineman singled to left field that tied the game 1-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded, Red Wings first baseman Jake Noll grounded into a forceout, allowing a run to come home that put Rochester back up 2-1. Then, Red Wings right fielder Daniel Palka drove in his second RBI of the game with a single to left field, adding another run 3-1.

With the bases loaded for Lehigh Valley at the top of the seventh inning, IronPigs left fielder Charlie Tilson hit a two-run RBI ground-rule double on a fly ball down the left field line that tied the game 3-3.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, with runners on the corners, Red Wings right fielder Daniel Palka drove in the game-winning RBI single to right field to give Rochester a 4-3 win.

Lehigh Valley starting pitcher Adonis Medina finished the afternoon (4.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO). The win went to Red Wings pitcher Aaron Barrett (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB), while the loss went to IronPigs pitcher Braeden Ogle (0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB).

Julian Garcia (0-3, 7.22 ERA) started for Lehigh Valley against Rochester’s Bryan Bonnell (1-2, 3.80 ERA) in game two.

At the top of the second inning, with a runner on second base, IronPigs third baseman Ruben Tejada doubled on a sharp ground ball to left field that put Lehigh Valley up 1-0. Then, center fielder Arquimedes Gamboa singled to left field, scoring a run for a 2-0 lead. Then, with the bases loaded for Lehigh Valley, left fielder Mickey Moniak doubled to center field, bringing home two more runs 4-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, with runners on first and second base, Red Wings shortstop Jecksson Flores doubled on a sharp ground ball to the left that cut Lehigh Valley’s lead in half 4-2.

In the bottom of the third inning, with a runner on first base, the Red Wings pulled within one 4-3 on a Jake Noll RBI double to left-center field. Then with runners on first and second base, Red Wings center fielder Donovan Casey singled on a line drive to center field that tied the game 4-4. Three batters later, Red Wings second baseman Al Castillo hit a two-run double to center field that put Rochester in the lead 6-4.

Moving ahead to the top of the seventh inning, Sam Clay closed the game for the Red Wings. He gave up a hit and walked before getting the three outs as Rochester swept the doubleheader with a 6-4 win over Lehigh Valley.

Lehigh Valley starting pitcher Julian Garcia finished the night (2.0 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) on his way to his fourth loss of the season. The win went to Red Wings pitcher Alberto Baldonado (2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 SO). Rochester pitcher Sam Clay (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) earned his first save of the season.

The teams will close out the series today at 1:05 pm. Both teams will announce their pitcher later.
