Nick Maton snaps IronPigs four-game losing streak

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (44-54) snapped a four-game losing streak in extra innings Saturday night at Coca-Cola Park against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (58-38).

Adonis Medina (3-5, 5.09 ERA) started for Lehigh Valley versus Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s Deivi Garcia (2-6, 6.87 ERA).

The RailRiders went up 1-0 at the top of the first inning after catcher Donny Sands reached first base on a fielding error by first baseman Alec Bohm. Then, RailRiders first baseman Rob Brantley singled on a sharp line drive to center field, adding another run 2-0.

Still, with no outs and the bases loaded, RailRiders designated hitter Trey Amburgey grounded into a double play, bringing home a run for a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first inning, with runners on the corners, IronPigs third baseman Matt Vierling drove in a run with an RBI single to right field, cutting the RailRiders lead 3-1. Then, with the bases loaded, RailRiders pitcher Deivi Garcia walked in a run 3-2.

At the top of the fourth inning, with runners on first and second base, RailRiders center fielder Estevan Florial singled on a ground ball to right field, extending the lead 4-2. In the bottom of the fourth inning, with runners on first and second base, IronPigs first baseman Alec Bohm tied the game 4-4 with a two-run double to right field.

At the top of the fifth inning, the IronPigs made a pitching change with Jeff Singer in for Adonis Medina (4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR). However, the RailRiders would get the lead back 5-4 after catcher Donny Sands hit a solo home run to left field.

Moving ahead to the bottom of the ninth inning with runners on second and third base, the IronPigs tied the game 5-5 on a sacrifice fly to right field by third baseman Matt Vierling to send the game into extra innings.

In extra innings, each team has a player go to second base to start the inning. The RailRiders took a 6-5 lead at the top of the tenth inning when designated hitter Trey Amburgey singled to right field. Then in the bottom of the tenth inning, with runners on the corners, Lehigh Valley tied it up 6-6 after pitch hitter TJ Rivera singled on a soft fly ball to center field.

At the top of the eleventh inning, with a runner on third base, RailRiders third baseman Max Burt’s sacrifice fly to left field put the RailRiders back up 7-6.

In the bottom of the eleventh inning, with the bases loaded, IronPigs designated hitter Cornelius Randolph singled on a sharp ground ball to right field that tied the game 7-7. Lehigh Valley had a chance to win the game. However, IronPigs left fielder Adam Haseley hit into a double play.

At the top of the twelfth inning, with a runner on third base, the RailRiders took an 8-7 lead after a sacrifice fly to right field by left fielder Jonathan Davis.

In the bottom of the twelfth inning, with runners on second and third base, IronPigs right fielder Charlie Tilson reached first base on a fielder’s choice that tied the game 8-8. Then, with runners on the corners, IronPigs second baseman Nick Maton ended the game with a sacrifice fly to left field, ending Lehigh Valley’s four-game losing streak with a 9-8 win.

The win went to IronPigs pitcher Braeden Ogle (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 SO), while the loss went to RailRiders pitcher Nick Green (1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB).

The six-game series wraps up today at 1:35 pm. David Paulino (4-3, 4.13 ERA) starts for Lehigh Valley against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s Nick Nelson (2-2, 3.72 ERA).
