On Tuesday night, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (46-55) continued their homestand at Coca-Cola Park against the Syracuse Mets (39-61).
Mark Appel (3-4, 6.00 ERA) started for Lehigh Valley versus former IronPigs pitcher Vance Worley (4-4, 5.64 ERA).
The Mets jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the top of the second inning on a two-run home run to right field that hit the yellow pole by third baseman David Thompson.
In the bottom of the third inning, with a runner on second base, IronPigs second baseman C.J. Chatham doubled on a sharp line drive to right field that cut the Mets lead 2-1.
At the top of the sixth inning, with runners on first and second base for the Mets, the IronPigs made a pitching change with Mark Appel (5.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR) being replaced by Zach McAllister. McAllister walked Mets first baseman Travis Blankenhorn before giving up a two-run single to Mets shortstop Wilfredo Tovar that extended the lead 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with a runner on first base, the IronPigs pulled within one run 4-3 on a two-run home run to left field by third baseman T.J. Rivera.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, with a runner on first base, the IronPigs took a 5-4 lead off a two-run home run by second baseman C.J. Chatham. It was Chatham’s first home run of the season and third RBI of the night.
At the top of the ninth inning, Jeff Singer was the new pitcher for the IronPigs. With two outs, Mets right fielder Albert Almora Jr. was caught trying to steal third base that ended the game. The IronPigs defeated the Mets 5-4.
The win went to IronPigs pitcher Zach McAllister (1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 SO), while the loss went to Mets pitcher Yeizo Campos (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR). IronPigs pitcher Jeff Singer (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) earned his third save of the season.
Game two of the six-game series continues today at 7:05 pm. Both teams will announce their pitchers later today.
