Nick Maton breaks up no-hit bid Saturday night

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (53-74) were shut out Saturday night 7-0 to the Worcester Red Sox (73-54) at Coca-Cola Park.

Mauricio Llovera (2-2, 3.80 ERA) started for Lehigh Valley against Worcester’s Daniel Gossett (6-5, 4.62 ERA).

The game was scoreless through five innings. IronPigs starter Mauricio Llovera was taken out in the bottom of the fifth inning, allowing one hit. He threw 78 pitches (4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO). Jeff Singer was the new IronPigs pitcher.

At the top of the sixth inning with Red Sox runners on first and second, Ramon Rosso replaced Jeff Singer. Then, Red Sox catcher Ronaldo Hernandez doubled on a sharp fly ball to left field, scoring two runs that put the Red Sox on top 2-0. Next, Red Sox shortstop Jonathan Arauz singled on a ground ball to center field, adding another run for a 3-0 lead.

At the top of the seventh inning, with a Red Sox runner on second base, left fielder Franchy Cordero doubled on a sharp line drive to right field, adding another run for a 4-0 lead.

Moving ahead to the top of the ninth inning, JD Hammer was the new IronPigs pitcher. With Red Sox runners on first and second base, left fielder Franchy Cordero crushed a three-run home run out towards right-center field for a 7-0 lead.

Up until the ninth inning, Red Sox pitcher Daniel Gossett had not allowed a hit. IronPigs second baseman Nick Maton broke the no-hit bid with a single to third base. Geoff Hartlieb replaced Daniel Gossett, but not before the IronPigs fans gave Gossett a standing ovation. Gossett threw 103 pitches (8.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO). With two out, Hartlieb got the last out as the IronPigs lose their eighth straight game 7-0.

The win went to Red Sox start Daniel Gossett, while the loss went to IronPigs pitcher Jeff Singer (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO). It was Singer’s third loss of the season.

The 2021 season comes to a close today at 1:35 pm. David Paulino (4-3, 4.02 ERA) starts for Lehigh Valley against Worcester’s Connor Seabold (3-3, 3.67 ERA).
