Eagles can’t overcome mistakes in loss to the Chiefs

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles returned to Lincoln Financial Field Sunday afternoon against former Eagles head coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs.

While the Eagles’ offense did play better on Sunday, they continued to struggle in the red zone and with penalties. The Eagles had three chances in the red zone to score 21 points. Instead, they came away with only field goals.

The Eagles lost to the Chiefs 42-30 for their third loss in a row. They are now 0-3 against the Chiefs since Andy Reid became the Chiefs’ head coach.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts went 32/48 for 387-yards, two touchdowns, and was the leading rusher with eight carries for 47-yards. His two touchdown passes went to tight end Dallas Goedert and wide receiver Greg Ward.

While he did play a better game, he missed several wide-open receivers that could’ve gained more yards or scored more points. The Eagles had 461-yards on offense.

Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell had three carries for 31-yards and a rushing touchdown. The Eagles continued not to give the ball to Mile Sanders. Miles Sanders had seven carries for 13-yards.

Eagles rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith had a huge game. He led the receivers with seven catches for 122-yards. He had a touchdown taken away from him when he stepped out of bounds, then came back in and caught the ball, resulting in a penalty. Per NFL rules, he can’t be the first person to touch the ball after stepping out of bounds.

The Eagles continue to cost themselves with penalties. They had nine penalties called against them for a loss of 49-yards. Three of those penalties took 21 points off the board. In the first four games, the Eagles have been penalized 44 times for 281-yards, the most in the league.

The Eagles’ defense got to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes once by Javon Hargrave. Linebacker Eric Wilson intercepted Mahomes once.

The Eagles’ defense could not stop the Chiefs’ offense. Patrick Mahomes went 24/30 for 278-yards, five touchdowns, one interception, and 26-yards rushing. Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire touched the ball 14 times for 102-yards, 12 receiving yards, and one touchdown.

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill could not be contained. He had eleven catches for 186-yards and three touchdowns. The Chief’s defense recorded three sacks, two of them by Michael Danna, and two forced fumbles.

The Eagles season only gets more complicated. Their next opponent is the Carolina Panthers next Sunday at 1 pm from Bank of America Stadium. The Panthers are coming off their first loss of the season to the Dallas Cowboys 36-28. The Panthers are averaging 24.3 points per game, while opponents are averaging 16.5 per game.
