For the final time of the 2021 season, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (53-75) took to the field at Coca-Cola Park Sunday afternoon against the Worcester Red Sox (74-54). The IronPigs had four hits in the game for a 10-1 loss.
David Paulino (4-3, 4.02 ERA) started for Lehigh Valley against Worcester’s Connor Seabold (3-3, 3.67 ERA).
At the top of the first inning with Red Sox runners on first and second base, left fielder Franchy Cordero singled on a sharp ground ball to right field for a 1-0 lead. Then, shortstop Jonathan Arauz flew out to the right field, scoring another run for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, with an IronPigs runner on second base, first baseman Darick Hall singled on a sharp ground ball to right field, scoring a run that cut the Red Sox lead 2-1. It was Hall’s 60th run batted in this year. This was as close as the IronPigs got to the Red Sox.
Moving ahead to the top of the sixth inning with Red Sox runners on the corners, right fielder Jarren Duran singled to right field, adding another run 3-1.
At the top of the seventh inning, David Paulino was replaced by Mike Adams. Paulino threw 91 pitches (6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO).
At the top of the eighth inning, with Red Sox runners on first and second base, third baseman Chad De La Guerra doubled on a sharp line drive to right field, tacking on another run 4-1. Two batters later, pinch hitter Josh Ockimey hit a sacrifice fly to right field made it 5-1.
At the top of the ninth inning, with the bases load for the Red Sox, third baseman Chad De La Guerra singled to right field, scoring two more runs for a 7-1 lead. Two batters later, Red Sox right fielder Taylor Motter cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field for a 10-1 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, John Schreiber closed the game for the Red Sox. With two outs, IronPigs first baseman Darick Hall walked with two outs. IronPigs catcher Logan O’Hoppe grounded out shortstop Jonathan Arauz to end the game. The IronPigs lose 10-1.
The IronPigs finish the season on a nine-game losing streak. The win went to Red Sox pitcher Connor Seabold (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO), while the loss went to IronPigs starter David Paulino. It was Paulino’s fourth loss of the season.
Lehigh Valley IronPigs finishes the season with a record of 53-75. The IronPigs final Triple-A stats are 20th in the Triple-A East in hitting (.236 AVG, .328 OBP, .358 SLG, .685 OPS) and 14th in pitching (5.03 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, .251 AVG).
