Alouettes defense records ten sacks in a win over the Redblacks

The Montreal Alouettes defeated the Ottawa Redblacks 27-16 Saturday afternoon at TD Place, led by their defense. The Alouettes’ defense recorded ten sacks. Three players (Nick Usher, Michael Wakefield, and David Menard) each had two sacks. They also got a safety in the first quarter.

The secondary picked off Caleb Evans three times, and defensive back Rodney Randle Jr. had two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Alouettes quarterback Matt Shiltz started in place of Vernon Adams Jr., who was injured last week and is out for six games. Shiltz went 21/34 for 281-yards, one touchdown, one interception, four carries for 12-yards, and one rushing touchdown. That rushing touchdown came in the first quarter on a four-yard run that extended the Alouettes lead 10-0 with 7:48 left.

Shiltz’s one touchdown pass happened in the second quarter when he threw a 50-yard touchdown pass into double coverage that Jake Wieneke caught, extending the Alouettes lead 21-10 with 5:30 left. Jake Wieneke led the receivers with seven catches for 114-yards and one touchdown.

Alouettes running back Cameron Artis-Payne carried the ball 19 times for 83-yards. Kicker David Cote was a perfect 3/3, with his longest field goal being 28-yards.

Redblacks quarterback Caleb Evans went 12/23 for 145-yards, one touchdown, three interceptions, and three carries for 31-yards. Evans’s touchdown happened late in the first quarter when he threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stafford as time expired, trailing 12-9. Taryn Christion replaced Evans in the fourth quarter and went 2/6 for 20-yards.

Redblacks running De’Lance Turner had seven carries for 32-yards, wide receiver Ryan Davis led the receivers with five catches for 70-yards. Kicker Lewis Ward was a perfect 3/3, with his longest field goal being 45-yards. The defense recorded one sack, one interception, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

The Redblacks suffered a setback on special teams when DeVonte Dedmon was injured on the kickoff. He was helped off the field and did not return for the rest of the game. In the first quarter, DeVonta Dedmon returned a punt for 47-yards and was tackled at the Alouettes’ 38-yard line. Ryan Davis took over returner duties.
