Winnipeg Blue Bombers acquire K Sergio Castillo from the Lions

On Tuesday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers traded a 2022 fourth-round pick to the BC Lions for kicker Sergio Castillo. This will be Castillo’s second stint with the team.

The 30-year-old from La Joya, Texas, played college football at West Texas A&M. He went undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft and signed with the Atlanta Falcons.

After being released by the Falcons, he joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2015. In his first season, he made ten field goals. After the 2015 season, he signed with the Ottawa Redblacks and played in two games. After the Redblacks, he joined the Tiger-Cats and made 29 field goals. However, Castillo’s season ended after tearing an ACL attempting to make a tackle.

In 2018, he signed with the Ottawa Redblacks and was released and didn’t play in 2018. Then in 2019, he joined the San Antonio Commanders of the AAF. He didn’t last long and was released in January.

Sergio Castillo returned to the CFL, signing with the BC Lions in 2019. He made 41 field goals. In 2020, he played for the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL, making five goals before the league shut down.

That same year, he signed with the BC Lions. However, due to the CFL canceling the season, he opt-out to sign with the New York Jets. The Lions maintained his rights after leaving. While with the Jets, he played in six games, making eight field goals. He was waved in January and tried out for the Tennessee Titans.

In addition, the Blue Bombers added kicker Gabriel Ferraro to the practice squad. The 26-year-old from Mississauga, Ontario, played college at Guelph University. Ferraro was drafted in the seventh round of the 2018 CFL Draft by the Calgary Stampeders.

In 2019, Ferraro played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He played in five games and made seven field goals, with his longest being 48-yards.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers play the BC Lions at IG Field on Saturday, October 23rd, at 7 pm on ESPN+.
