Alouettes offense shines in win to tie for first place

For the final time of the 2021 season, the Montreal Alouettes and the Toronto Argonauts met Friday night at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium. In their last meeting back on September 24th, both teams combined for 57 points. . The win tied the Alouettes for first place in the East Division with the Argonauts.

The Alouettes offense, led by QB Matt Shiltz, RB William Stanback, and WR Eugene Lewis, helped defeat the Argonauts 37-16. Together, the Alouettes put up 443 total yards.

Alouettes quarterback Matt Shiltz lit up the Argo’s defense, going 12/18 for 212-yards, two touchdowns, and two carries for eleven yards. His two touchdown passes came in the second quarter. On the first touchdown, Shiltz threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Eugene Lewis, who had an Argo defender on him and still caught the touchdown for a 7-3 lead with 13:21 left.

The two connected again when Shiltz’s pass went 58-yards, and no one was covering Eugene Lewis, who easily walked in for the touchdown for a 14-10 lead with 8:26 left in the second quarter. Eugene Lewis caught seven passes for 156-yards and two touchdowns.

The passing game wasn’t the only thing working for the Alouettes. Running Back William Stanback was running wild, carrying the ball 24 times for 203-yards and one touchdown. In addition, Alouettes kicker David Cote made three field goals, with his longest being 43-yards.

The Alouettes defense took care of business on the other side with three sacks, two of them by Chris Ackie, along with two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and four interceptions, including Najee Murray’s 64-yard interception, returned for a touchdown.

The only major injury the Alouettes had was returner, Dante Absher. He returned a punt, and after he was tackled, he suffered a leg injury and had to be carted off the field.

Toronto Argonauts quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson was 25/40 for 291-yards, four interceptions, and one carry for 19-yards. Running back, John White had four carries for 20-yards. Backup quarterback Antonio Pipkin had four carries for ten yards and scored the only Argo’s touchdowns inside the red zone. The Argonauts’ offense had 345 total yards.

Wide receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. led with eight catches for 116-yards. Ricky Collins Jr. was not far behind Gittens with six catches for 95-yards, and kicker Boris Bede made one field goal for 25-yards. The defense had three sacks and one forced fumble. 

Next week, the Montreal Alouettes host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday, October 30th, at 7 pm on ESPN+. The Toronto Argonauts host the BC Lions on Saturday, October 30th, at 4 pm on ESPN+.
