Roughriders beat the Alouettes to clinch a playoff spot

The Saskatchewan Roughriders defeated the Montreal Alouettes 19-14 Saturday night to clinch a playoff spot. Both team’s defenses kept this a low-scoring game.

The Roughriders are the second team in the West Division to clinch a playoff spot behind the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who clinched the first seed last week.

Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Cody Fajardo went 14/25 for 158-yards, and four carries for 46-yards. Running back, William Powell had eleven carries for 30-yards, one touchdown, and four catches for 40-yards. His touchdown happened in the second quarter when he went up the middle for a three-yard run that put the Roughriders up 7-3 with 47-seconds left.

Wide receiver Shaq Evans had three catches for 35-yards. Kicker Brett Lauther was a perfect 4/4 with his longest field goal for 41-yards. The defense recorded five sacks, two each by Pete Robinson and Jonathan Woodard, and one interception.

For the Alouettes, quarterback Matthew Shiltz went 7/13 for 106-yards, one interception, and four carries for eleven yards. Shiltz was taken out of the game for Trevor Harris, who made his Alouettes debut and played in the fourth quarter.

Harris went 12/15 for 123-yards, one touchdown, and three carries for 31 yards. Trevor Harris’s touchdown came in the fourth quarter from the pocket, dropped back before throwing the ball to Eugene Lewis, who leaped in the air to catch the ball with a Roughriders defender on him. The Alouettes trailed the Roughriders 16-14 with 1:35 left. Eugene Lewis had five catches for 54 yards and one touchdown.

Montreal Alouettes running back William Stanback touched the ball 19 times for 80 yards. Kicker David Cote was a perfect 2/2, with his longest field goal for 45 yards. The Alouette’s defense recorded six sacks, two of them by Woody Baron.

Next week, the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Edmonton Elks on Friday, November 5th, at 9:45 pm on ESPN+. Finally, the Montreal Alouettes head to IG Field against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday, November 6th, at 7 pm on ESPN+.
