On Monday, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats bolstered their defense with the signings of DBs Jean Ventose and Malcolm Thompson along with LBs Jersey Henry and Ben Whiting. All players are eligible to practice with the team on November 3rd once they complete quarantine.
Jean Ventose is a 26-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, who played 15 games in two seasons (2017-18) at the University of British Columbia. He recorded 31 tackles, four pass breakups, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. Before heading to UBC, Ventose redshirted at the University of Calgary.
After college, he was drafted by the Tiger-Cats in the sixth round of the 2020 CFL Draft. The Tiger-Cats released him during training camp.
Malcolm Thompson is a 26-year-old from Windsor, Ontario, who played 31 games in four seasons (2015-19) at Wilford Laurie University. He had 120.5 tackles, two sacks, nine interceptions, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and eight pass breakups. He was a member of the 2016 OUA championship. He has had to overcome two ACL tears in his collegiate career.
Thompson won several league awards, including the 2019 OUA Men’s Football Second Team All-Star, 2016 OUA Men’s Football First Team All-Star, 2016 CIS Men’s Football First Team All-Canadian, and the 2015 OUA Men’s Football Second Team All-Star.
After college, Thompson went undrafted in the 2019 CFL Draft and signed with Calgary Stampeders. However, he was cut during training camp.
Jersey Henry is a 26-year-old from LaSalle, Quebec, who played college football at Concordia. He played 23 games over three seasons (2017-19) with the Stingers and had 119 tackles, three sacks, five pass breakups, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. Henry played in the 2019 U Sports East-West Bowl.
After college, he was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in the sixth round of the 2020 CFL Draft. However, he was cut during training camp.
Ben Whiting is a 24-year-old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and played college football at the University of Saskatchewan. He played 46 games in five seasons (2015-19) with the Huskies, tallying 259.5 tackles, 12 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, and three sacks. He helped the Huskies win the 2018 Hardy Cup as Canada West champions.
After college, Whiting was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in the seventh round of the 2019 CFL Draft. After being cut by the Alouettes, he returned to the University of Saskatchewan for his final season. Whiting also had a tryout with the Calgary Stampeders this year but was released.
