Calgary Stampeders sign LS Randy Chevrier and LB Ben Whiting

Calgary Stampeders

On Thursday, the Calgary Stampeders signed veteran long-snapper Randy Chevrier and linebacker Ben Whiting. Both players were placed on the suspended list as they complete the mandatory quarantine period.

Randy Chevrier is a 45-year-old from Montreal, Quebec, who played college football at McGill University. He spent eleven years with the Stampeders and won two Grey Cup championships in 2008 and 2014. He also won a Grey Cup with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2003.

Chevrier was drafted twice. He went in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars while going first round by the Edmonton Eskimos in the 2001 CFL Draft. The Jaguars waived him in September 2001.

Chevrier has played in 181-games with Edmonton, Calgary, and Saskatchewan. He retired after the 2017 season but returns to the field to provide the Stampeders with insurance at the long-snapper position.

Ben Whiting is a 24-year-old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and played college football at the University of Saskatchewan. He played 46 games in five seasons (2015-19) with the Huskies, tallying 259.5 tackles, 12 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, and three sacks. He helped the Huskies win the 2018 Hardy Cup as Canada West champions.

After college, Whiting was drafted by the Montreal Alouettes in the seventh round of the 2019 CFL Draft. After being cut by the Alouettes, he returned to the University of Saskatchewan for his final season. Whiting also had a tryout with the Calgary Stampeders this year but was released. He recently spent time with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Calgary Stampeders wrap up the season Saturday, November 20th, against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at 7 pm on ESPN+.
