On Tuesday, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms signed goalie Jon Gillies and right-winger Nick Lappin to Professional Try Out (PTO) contracts.
Jon Gillies is a 27-year-old from Concord, New Hampshire. He recently played for the Providence Bruins on a PTO contract and went 3-0, with a 1.67 (GAA) and a .948 (SV%). One of Gillies’s wins came against the Phantoms back on November 12th. He made 31 of 34 saves. He also appeared in one game for the Maine Mariners of the ECHL. Gillies was released last week.
Gillies was a 2012 third-round pick by the Calgary Flames. He played 12 games with the Flames with a 4-5-1 record, 2.71 (GAA), and .903 (SV%). In the AHL, Gillies has played in 168 games in seven seasons with a 73-62-30 record, 2.88 (GAA), .906 (SV%) for the Stockton Heat, Utica Comets, and Providence Bruins.
Nick Lappin is a 29-year-old from Geneva, Illinois, signed as an undrafted free agent with the New Jersey Devils in 2016. He is the son of Peter Lappin, who played seven seasons in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks and Minnesota North Stars. Last season, Lappin played eleven games for the Cleveland Monsters with one goal and one assist.
Lappin played 221 games in seven seasons for the Albany Devils, Binghamton Devils, San Antonio Rampage, and Cleveland Monsters, with 73 goals, 63 assists, .62 (PPG), and 105 (PIM). In the NHL, he played 60 games with five goals, three assists, .13 (PPG), and 21 (PIM).
