On Thursday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders and defensive back A.J. Hendy have parted ways due to Hendy not being happy with playing time, according to Murray McCormick of the Regina Leader-Post.
Head coach Craig Dickenson told McCormick, “He decided that he doesn’t want to play anymore. We didn’t want him to leave, but he felt like he should have been playing more. He was unhappy, and we’re never going to keep a guy around who is unhappy.”
A.J. Hendy is a 28-year-old from Gaithersburg, Maryland, who played college football at Maryland. He went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft and joined the Miami Dolphins. He played one game for the Dolphins on special teams.
He also spent time on the practice squad with the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans. In 2020, Hendy played five games for the New York Guardians of the XFL with 26 tackles until the league shut down due to COVID-19, and his contract was terminated.
He joined the Roughriders in 2020, but the season was canceled due to COVID-19. In his first season with the Roughriders, Hendy played eleven games with 14 tackles, seven special team tackles, and one interception.
With Hendy out, the Roughriders will play Jacob Dearborn. He is a 27-year-old from Yarker, Ontario, who played college football at Carleton University.
Jacob Dearborn has played 22 games in two seasons with 18 tackles, six special team tackles, and two interceptions.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Calgary Stampeders in the Western Semi-Final on Sunday, November 28th, at 4:30 pm on ESPNEWS.
