The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a rematch 33-25 in overtime to win their second straight Grey Cup championship at Tim Hortons Field.
The Blue Bombers were down 19-10 heading into the fourth quarter and scored fifteen unanswered points to take a 25-22 lead. However, the Tiger-Cats tied the game 25-25 with four seconds left, sending the game into overtime.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zack Collaros went 21/32 for 240 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Collaros’s touchdown happened in the fourth quarter and overtime.
In the fourth quarter, The Ticats brought the blitz when Collaros found Nic Demski, who juked a couple of Ticats players and ran for a 29-yard touchdown, making it a two-point game 22-20. In overtime, Collaros found an all-alone Darvin Adams for a 13-yard touchdown.
In CFL overtime rules, teams must go for two points and successfully take a 33-25 lead. Darvin Adams led the Blue Bombers receivers with five catches for 61-yards and one touchdown.
Running back Andrew Harris carried the ball 18 times for 80 yards, while kicker Sergio Castillo was a perfect 5/5 with his longest field goal for 45 yards. The defense recorded three sacks and two interceptions. Kyrie Wilson sealed the game in overtime by intercepting Jeremiah Masoli on their own 43-yard line.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Dane Evans went 4/9 for 24 yards and one interception. Evans was injured in the second quarter and did not return to the game with a neck injury. Backup Jeremiah Masoli went 20/25 for 185 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and six carries for 35 yards. Masoli’s touchdowns happened in the second and third quarters.
In the second quarter, Masoli gunned the ball down the middle to Steven Dunbar for a 12-yard touchdown that put the Tiger-Cats up 10-7 with 15 seconds left. Dunbar led the Tiger-Cats receivers with six catches for 63 yards and one touchdown.
Then, in the third quarter, Masoli found Brandon Banks, who beat a Blue Bombers defender for an 11-yard touchdown that put the Tiger-Cats in the lead 17-10 with 3:47 left.
Running back Don Jackson led the Tiger-Cats rushers with 11 carries for 59 yards, while kicker Michael Domagala went 3/3 with his longest field goal for 13 yards.
The defense recorded one sack, two interceptions by Kameron Kelly, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
The special teams made a questionable call shortly after the Blue Bombers scored to trail by two points by allowing the ball to go out of the endzone for a single point, making it a one-point game 22-21 with 5:33 left.
After Blue Bombers kicker Sergio Castillo made a 45-yard field goal to go up 24-22, Tim White of the Tiger-Cats took a knee in the endzone to concede another single point to trail 25-22. There would be a different outcome had they did not concede those two points.
During the Grey Cup ceremonies, Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros was named MVP, and wide receiver Nic Demski was named Most Valuable Canadian.
