On Tuesday, James Hinchcliffe announced on Twitter that he is stepping away from full-time IndyCar competition to pursue new opportunities in other motorsports.
The 35-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, competed in sixteen races for Andretti Autosport with one podium finish in Nashville. Hinchcliffe wrapped up his eleventh year in IndyCar with 161 starts, one pole, six wins, and 18 podium finishes. Hinchcliffe was the 2011 Rookie of the Year.
“With a decade-plus of incredible memories in the bank, I am happy to announce I am stepping away from full-time IndyCar competition,” said James Hinchcliffe. “This was not a decision taken lightly, and it was one made with the full support of my family and closest supporters. There were many factors, both personal and professional, that led me to this decision, but it truly felt like the time was right.”
Hinchcliffe clarified that he is not retiring. “This is by no means a retirement from racing! If anything, this decision has freed me up to dip my toes into other forms of motorsports and explore other interests and opportunities. More on that coming soon!”
When Hinchcliffe was not racing, he was a broadcaster for IndyCar and IMSA on NBC Sports Network. Besides IndyCar, Hinchcliffe has competed in different motorsports from IMSA to the Repco Supercars Championship, and SRX.
