Opinion Trax: Can we get more teams to do Christmas songs

NFL

During the Christmas season, we listen to our favorite holiday songs from Dean Martin, Burl Ives, Frank Sinatra, Roy Rogers, and countless classics that have been listened to for generations.

Many artists have recorded their own renditions of those classic melodies including sports teams. Who cannot forget the Dallas Cowboys Christmas album in 1985 featuring the 12 Days of Christmas or a New Hat for Coach Landry, and I Don’t Want to Be Home for Christmas, it’s that playoff time of year.

The Dallas Cowboys were not the only team to have a Christmas song/album. In 1980, the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills had their own versions of the 12 Days of Christmas.

The only difference between the three is the Cowboys players sang those songs while the Kardiac Kids sang both the Browns and Bills.

When you listen to these songs, whether you’re a fan or not, it brings a smile to your heart while wishing your team would do their own version of the song.

Since then, only the 2018 Washington Capitals have done their own version of the 12 Days of Christmas. They are the only hockey team to do a Christmas song. It would be cool if other hockey teams joined in the fun with their own version of the classics.

Songs/albums could be sold for charities.  I am sure the fans would purchase the songs/albums when they know the profits are going for a good cause.

I would love to see more teams make their own Christmas music for their fans to enjoy and add to their favorite Christmas playlist.

It’s fun to listen to your favorite team sing Christmas songs during the most wonderful time of the year. Even if the only tone they know is off-key. What team or player would you love to hear sing the Christmas song?

  1. Still have my cassette of the Dallas Cowboys singing Christmas carols. The best part was when Coach Landry sang. What memories. Thank you for including the videos, great memories.
