Toronto Argonauts re-signs five players for 2022

On Wednesday, the Toronto Argonauts announced they re-signed WRs Sam Baker and Cam Phillips, DB Tarvarus McFadden, FB Joe Carbone, and LB Tony George.

Cam Phillips is a 25-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, and played college football at Virginia Tech. He went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft. Phillips played two games for the Buffalo Bills catching one ball for nine yards.

Phillips made a name for himself in the XFL for the Houston Roughnecks. He led the league in receiving with 31 catches for 455-yards and nine touchdowns in five games.

After the season was canceled due to COVID-19, Phillips got a tryout for both the Carolina Panthers and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Then, in July, he signed with the Argonauts and played one game with two catches for 20-yards.

Sam Baker is a 23-year-old from Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. He played U Sports at the University of Saskatchewan. In 2021 caught 53 passes for 657-yards and five touchdowns on his way to being named a Canada West All-Star. The Argonauts drafted him in the sixth round of the 2021 CFL Draft.

Tarvarus McFadden is a 24-year-old from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He played college football at Florida State and went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft. Early in his career, he spent his time with the San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, and Detroit Lions practice squads.

He left the NFL to sign with the Tampa Bay Vipers of the XFL. In five games, McFadden had ten tackles and two interceptions. His numbers led him to sign with the Argonauts in February, but he was released before the start of the regular season. He re-signed with the Argonauts and was placed on the practice squad.

Tony Jones is a 24-year-old from Casselberry, Florida. He played college football at Texas Tech. This year, he played ten games for the Iowa Barnstormers of the Indoor Football League with 71 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. His numbers earned him the IFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Joe Carbone is a 23-year-old from Ridgeway, Ontario. He played for four years at Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania. In 2021, he played five games for the Windsor Lancers with three catches for 18 yards.
