On Thursday, the Philadelphia Stars named Bart Andrus head coach. The announcement took place on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. Andrus was the quarterback coach for the Ottawa Gee-Gees of U Sports.
Bart Andrus (63 years old) was a former college quarterback at Montana. He has over 40 years of coaching experience. After coaching St. Patrick’s High School for three seasons, Andrus became a graduate assistant at BYU in 1984. He spent two years at BYU before becoming the offensive coordinator at Humboldt State for three seasons.
For nine years, Andrus was an offensive coordinator at Humboldt State, Montana State, and Southern Utah. In 1997, he joined Jeff Fisher’s staff as an offensive assistant and quarterback coach for the Tennessee Oilers. In 1999, Andrus was the quarterback coach when the Oilers were renamed the Titans.
In 2000, he took his experience to NFL Europe as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Rhein Fire. The Fire won the World Bowl 2000 over the Scottish Claymores 13-10 with Danny Wuerffel as the Fire quarterback. He completed 161 passes for 2,042 yards, 25 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. His 25 touchdown passes to set the league’s new record.
Following a successful season, Andrus was named the head coach of the Amsterdam Admirals. In 2005, Andrus led the Admirals to win World Bowl XIII 27-21 over the Berlin Thunder. It was the Admirals’ first championship. Andrus was named coach of the year in 2005.
Bart Andrus coached the Admirals for six seasons with a 34-36 record. His tenure as a coach ended when the Admirals folded after the 2007 season.
In 2008, Andrus returned to Tennessee as an offensive assistant. The following year, he was named head coach of the Toronto Argonauts. After a 3-15 season, Andrus was fired after one season.
He took two years off before returning as an offensive coordinator of the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL. In 2012, he was named the Nighthawks’ head coach. The Nighthawks were 2-2 when the league folded halfway through the season.
Andrus returned to the NFL in 2013 as an offensive assistant for the St. Louis Rams. He left the Rams a year later. In 2020, Andrus coached Team 9, a centralized farm system for the XFL.
After the league suspended operations, Andrus was named head coach of the General of The Spring League. He led the Generals to win the championship 37-14 over the Aviators. Bart Andrus’s overall coaching record is 40-54.
In addition to Andrus being named the Stars’ head coach, Mike Reilly was named head coach of the New Jersey Generals, Kevin Sumlin of the Houston Gamblers, and Todd Haley for the Tampa Bay Bandits.
