On Monday, the B.C. Lions re-signed speedy wide receiver Lucky Whitehead to a two-year contract extension through the 2023 season.
Whitehead was scheduled to be a free agent on February 8th. Whitehead becomes the highest-paid receiver in the CFL, making $200,000 in 2022 and $205,000 in 2023.
Lucky Whitehead played 12 games with 60 catches for 932 yards, four touchdowns, and two carries for 12 yards. On special teams, Whitehead had 12 punt returns for 130 yards and one touchdown. Whitehead missed two games with a broken hand.
Lucky Whitehead was selected as a CFL All-Star and CFL West All-Star in 2021. Whitehead led the CFL with 447 (YAC) and recorded four games of 100 yards or more receiving yards. The Lions nominated him for CFL’s Most Outstanding Player.
Lucky Whitehead was excited to re-sign with the Lions. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to be back and to help this squad get to the next level. We have some pieces already in place to contend year in and year out, and I can’t wait to see what else this off-season brings.”
After going undrafted in the NFL in 2015 out of Florida Atlantic, Whitehead signed with the Dallas Cowboys (2015-16) and played two seasons for them before joining the New York Jets in 2017.
In 2019, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Whitehead, and he made noise right away. In 15 games, Whitehead caught 52 passes for 521 yards, two touchdowns, nine carries for 92 yards, and one touchdown. Whitehead had seven punt returns for 54 yards and 20 kickoff returns for 596 yards and one touchdown on special teams. The Blue Bombers won the Grey Cup in 2019.
