On Monday, the Calgary Stampeders re-signed linebacker Jameer Thurman to a one-year contract extension and running back Ka’Deem Carey to a two-year contract extension through the 2023 season.
Jameer Thurman played 14 games in 2021 with 62 tackles, one special teams tackle, three sacks, and three forced fumbles in his second stint with the Stampeders. Thurman was scheduled to be a free agent on February 8th.
Jameer Thurman on returning to Calgary said, “To the fans, my teammates, and everyone else in the organization, let’s go be great and bring the Grey Cup back to Calgary.”
Thurman spent the first two seasons (2017-18) in Calgary, playing 35 games with 134 tackles, 29 special team tackles, three sacks, three interceptions, and three forced fumbles. He was a key contributor in the Stampeders winning the 2018 Grey Cup championship.
In 2019, Thurman tried out for the Chicago Bears but was released at the end of training. Then in 2020, he played for the DC Defenders of the XFL with 28 tackles, one forced fumble, and one interception.
“Jameer is a dependable and productive player who is one of our leaders on defense,” said Stampeders President and General Manager John Hufnagel. “He’s a very important player for us, and at the age of 27, I believe he has the ability to get even better.”
Ka’Deem Carey played 13 games in 2021 with 164 carries for 869 yards, seven touchdowns, and 26 catches for 194 yards. Carey was scheduled to be a free agent next month.
Carey is ready to get back to work with his future now set. “I’m so happy to be back with all my guys on the offensive line – we are locked and loaded! We have the best o-line in the league, and I think Coach Dickie (Dave Dickenson) is the best offensive mind in the CFL. I love working with him and the rest of the Calgary coaching staff.”
Carey added, “It’s a great bunch of guys in that locker room, and I love playing in front of the fans in Calgary. Thanks to Huff for having faith in me, and I can’t wait to get out there and for us to finish what we started. God is good.”
In two seasons with the Stampeders, Carey’s played 21 games with 239 carries for 1,291 yards, nine touchdowns, 41 catches for 328 yards, and one touchdown.
Ka’Deem is a dynamic playmaker who was outstanding for us in 2021,” said Stampeders President and General Manager John Hufnagel. “The ability to run the ball is a critical part of a balanced offense, and we’re confident Ka’Deem will be able to do that for us over the next two seasons.”
