On Monday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders re-signed wide receiver Mitch Picton and defensive back Godfrey Onyeka. In a separate move, the Roughriders restructured the contract of quarterback Cody Fajardo.
Mitch Picton played ten games in 2021 with 25 catches for 218-yards and one touchdown. The Roughriders drafted Picton in the fifth round (37th pick) in the 2017 CFL Draft out of Regina.
Picton played five seasons (2013-17) at the University of Regina, catching 169 passes for 2,431 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six carries for 16 yards. He was named a 2016 U Sports First Team All-Canadian and Canada West All-Star.
Godfrey Onyeka played nine games in 2021 with 24 tackles and seven special teams tackles. The Edmonton Eskimos drafted Onyeka in the second round (10th pick) in the 2018 CFL Draft out of Wilfrid Laurier.
Onyeka played at Wilfrid Laurier University for four seasons with 180 tackles, ten interceptions, 11 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, and two sacks. He was a three-time U Sports First Team All-Canadian and a member of the 2016 Yates Cup championship team.
In addition to the signings, the Roughriders restructured quarterback Cody Fajardo’s contract. He was set to make $509,000 in hard money this season. The terms of his new deal were not disclosed. Back in October 2019, he signed a two-year extension, then signed another extension in January 2021.
Cody has always been the definition of a team player, and this is just another example of that,” said Roughriders President of Football Operations Jeremy O’Day. “His leadership both on and off the field has been a large part of our success, and we appreciate his team-first mentality as we head into the 2022 season.”
Fajardo led the Roughriders to a 9-5 record, playing 13 games with 281 completions for 2,970 yards, 14 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 78 carries for 468 yards and four touchdowns. The Roughriders made it to the Western Final, where they lost to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 21-17 at BMO Field.
