On Friday, Ottawa Redblacks offensive lineman Jon Gott announced his retirement after a ten-year career. Gott last played for the Redblacks in 2018.
Jon Gott (36-years-old) played 145 career games with the Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks. The Stampeders traded Gott to the Redblacks in 2014 for the 2014 first-overall pick and Marwan Hage.
“It just felt like the right time,” Gott said. “I’m pretty pumped for this team going into 2022, and I’m proud to be able to officially retire in a city that means so much to me. To the fans in Ottawa, RNation, you are the best in the league. I’m proud of what we accomplished together. I had a blast, and I’m thankful to have played for the REDBLACKS.”
Gott spent the first five seasons with the Calgary Stampeders, playing 62 games. After the trade to Ottawa, he played an additional 83 games, winning the 2016 Grey Cup championship over his former team, the Stampeders.
Gott is a two-time CFL All-Star (2015, 2016), a two-time CFL East All-Star (2015, 2016), and a 2016 Leo Dandurand Trophy winner for the best offensive lineman in the East Division.
Redblacks President and CEO Mark Goudie on Gott’s retirement said. “Jon is an original REDBLACK with an original personality, and he played a huge role in our early success. Jon represented the REDBLACKS, RNation, and our community with distinction and was the central figure in an iconic REDBLACKS moment, the first and only (legal) end-zone beer chug in CFL history.”
